Deepest Space – Gamejam Project

Deepest Space is a gamejam project made for Ludum Dare 48. The theme of the jam was “Deeper and Deeper”. Me and some other developer friends had been wanting to get a grasp on Unreal, so we thought this would be the perfect oppurtunity to do so!

The core concept for Deepest Space is simple. Get as far as you can into space before your fuel runs out.

As we developed upon that first concept, we added a Hull Damage aspect that the user would also need to keep from depleting. The user can harvest more fuel from planets they encounter in their space voyage.

My main tasks were to work on UI Programming, Asset Sourcing, Textures and UI Asset Creation using Photoshop.

The inspiration for Deepest Space’s UI came from Frontier Development’s Elite Dangerous title. It was a enjoyable task learing the ins and outs of Unreal’s powerful Blueprint system.

A nice way to engage the user was to allow them to decide their ship name. This shows on the menu and the gameplay UI.

I thought that an easy way to add more imserive elements to the game was to keep track of the ships position and voyage time. This way if they wanted to play again, they could try and beat their previous highscore by time and not just by distance.
